The Science as Art contest celebrates the San Diego research community with art ranging from primary images generated by researchers to researchers’ interpretations of science with traditional artistic tools. Submissions will be judged and winners will receive cash prizes and public display of their artwork at the San Diego Science Festival. Since art is valued for its capacity to communicate to people in a way that words cannot, it presents itself as a way for making the most complex issues of science comprehensible to anyone and everyone. The ultimate goal is to reignite public interest in and subsequent support for the sciences by making basic research more accessible and meaningful to everyone with art. Read more at www.BioEASI.org

Entries ranged from photographs and pictures to illustrations and drawings of different aspects of original science. Each artist/scientist included a short description of their work to describe their art and its scientific relevance. This year we received an array of work created by professors, grad students, high school teachers, and general science enthusiasts. 

The selection process is underway by our phenomenal judging panel. To read about our judges, click here. They will finish picking the winners in mid-March. Winners and runner-ups will be displayed by BioEASI at the San Diego Science Festival (March 27, 2010), and various locations in San Diego in 2010.

BioEASI hosts contests to challenge students and researchers to express their impressions of science or their research data in art form. The submissions were judged by a panel, votes were tallied, and the winners were selected. We received many beautiful and inspiring art pieces from the San Diego community.
